Your Free Ultimate Guide To Preparing Tea

FIS - Ultimate guide to prepare your tea

For those without special knowledge and experience on all things tea, it may seem like tea preparation is as simple as 1-2-3; but for those who want to savor a superior tea-drinking experience, there is so much to consider. The types of tea, accessories to use, and the step by step tea preparation process is all accounted for.  For the true tea-lovers, the details are everything!

To enjoy a cup of tea, it must be prepared correctly.  It does not matter how much your tea is worth, if you brew it wrong, your tea will be awful.

To steep that perfectly brewed cup of tea, you need to know a few things:

  • Water weight
  • Water temperature
  • Timing
  • Type of tea

Let us talk about these 4 elements in details.

Water Weight

You would not want a cup that is too bitter for anyone’s liking, so using too much tea will do just that for you; it will also break your bank. However, using too little tea will make a weak cup and will leave you wanting.

To avoid getting a too-little or too-much cup of tea, you may keep this ratio in mind—one teaspoon of tea leaves or approximately 2 grams of any of your loose leaves per 8 ounce cup of water.  A traditional tea cup would be of 8 ounce, remember that mugs or taller cups may hold 10-12 ounces of water.

Timing and Water Temperature

If you want the perfect cup of tea every time, then you must understand that not all tea types can be thrown in the same water temperature.

Boiling oxygenates the water which brings out the best flavor of tea.  Too much boiling or re-boiling will definitely affect how your tea will taste. It is always advisable to bring your water to a gentle boil.

If you are a tea connoisseur, you know that different tea types will require different water temperature and steeping time.

You can also use a smart tea infuser, if you want the perfect temperature. Breville seems to be the ideal brand, for a quality smart tea infuser. It would worth to try.

Tea Type

It is very important to know the different main tea types if you are keen to brew the perfect cup of tea. There are a variety of teas out there but here are the main types you should know: Black Tea, Green Tea, White Tea, Oolong Tea, and Herbal Tea.

To prepare Black Tea, water needs to be heated to 208 degrees Farenheit while the leaves need to be steeped for 2 to 5 minutes. If you like to add milk, place it in a pre-warmed cup before putting the leaves. Lemon may also be incorporated but not together with milk.

Green Tea and White Tea have similar preparation, heat the water to 175 degrees Farenheit while the leaves need to be steeped for 2 to 3 minutes. Steeping it beyond that will leave your cup a bitter taste. Sugar and honey may be added to achieve the sweetness you prefer, but milk and lemon are not common to use with these tea types.

Herbal Tea leaves need 208 degrees Farenheit of heated water and leaves to be steeped for 5 minutes or longer. Sugar and honey may be added but lemon and milk are best only for Black tea.

Finally, to prepare Oolong Tea, water needs to be heated to 195 degrees Farenheit and leaves to be steeped for 5 minutes or longer.  The tea is best enjoyed without any accompaniment.

There you have it, a good cup of tea is ready to brew. Just make sure not to overstock on your tea leaves because tea-lovers know when their tea is fresh.
